From the President’s Desk by Chuck Grimm

Fall 2014

This is my first letter since my trip to the Hospital. I thank the Lord daily for a great God, loving community and all of you great prayer warriors. I will try my best to not only be a good servant and historic buff for our great city but to continually show my faith and be a great servant to our Lord and Savior.

Betty Johnson has retired from the Nappanee Historic Preservation Committee after 23 years. Betty served as president several times and also held other offices during that time. Betty was our go girl for Nappanee historic information. She was also our number one writer, tour guide and story teller. She is greatly missed. We all love you Betty.  Take it easy and have fun. We “WILL” be calling.

Mayor Thompson has made a great choice in appointing Rocki Stillson to replace Betty. Rocki has hit the ground running and has all ready taken on many responsibilities and doing a nice job. Rocki has a good background in Nappanee history as her grandmother was Evelyn Lehman Culp, historian and library director for many years.

The Nappanee Center “Night at the Museum” is coming up and our committee is dedicated to helping the NPL and Museum make this another great night.  If you have not been to one of these you have missed a good opportunity. This will be held at the Nappanee Center on Oct. 10th 2014 and we are hoping for hundreds of history buffs to attend. The cost is zero and the Library always sees to it that there is much to learn.  The event will see many old native sons and daughters come to life and tell the Nappanee story as never told before. Mayor Thompson is usually on hand and plays a part in this old town historic play. Don’t miss it and the kids love it too.  The Nappanee founding fathers have much to share.

The Stauffer park bridge is still being looked at and we hope it can be historically repaired. This has been a very long project and we are glad the city is doing all they can to help. A special thanks to all the many, many City people and volunteers working on this project.

The historic Hartman House was painted and the Nappanee Center got a facelift last summer and it looks great. With all the cleaning, planning, trimming and yard work done by the Quilt Garden folks this place looks fantastic. You just cannot find a city filled with so many good volunteers as in good old Nappanee. This historic 1897 home is part of our Nappanee Museum and we are pleased to have been able to help the city make this a local historic landmark come to life again. Our Museum is built around this home and can be seen from inside our museum. If you have not seen this museum and the Hartman house you need to come to 302 W. Market St. and check it out. The cost is free to all ages.

The new placemats will be out soon and we hope you can find your favorite teacher and have some good old bulldog talk with your old classmates.

The 2014 Historic Preservation awards night was held this past May. I would like to take this time to thank my Historic Preservation Committee for stepping up in my absence and doing a GREAT!!!! job.  Thanks to Jeannie, Rocki, Vicki and Tim. Love you guys.
